ABILENE
(Texas) - Wildcat Salsa, a new gourmet salsa
available in ACU's Campus Store, made a pleasantly
fiery debut during ACU's Oct. 16 Homecoming
weekend. While shoppers in the Campus Store
sampled the new salsa, comments ranged from
"great flavor" to "perfect intensity
- not too mild, not too hot."
"It's the latest in Wildcat logo products,"
said Anthony Williams, manager of the Campus
Store. "And one we hope consumers enjoy
as they equate Abilene Christian University
with the popular Tex-Mex cuisine of our area."
Among those who sampled the product, Jessica
Gray, a junior from Lubbock, said, "This
is a wonderful recipe. The flavor and texture
is really nice. And it's a great gift idea for
people who want something that says ACU and
West Texas at the same time."
The salsa is produced locally by Disability
Resources, Inc., which is a non-profit organization
designed to meet special needs of persons with
developmental disabilities. The production of
Wildcat Salsa is part of a vocational program
designed to provide meaningful work opportunities
for adults served by Disability Resources, Inc.
"We are excited about Wildcat Salsa,"
said Bill Brant, president and CEO of Disability
Resources, Inc. "The manufacturing of Wildcats
Salsa creates more work opportunities for the
folks at Disability Resources, allowing us to
broaden the foundation that supports our mission."
Tony Dry, owner of the recipe, created the
spicy blend that is now Wildcat Salsa 12 years
ago. The recipe won first place in the 1996
and 1997 Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup salsa
contest. The recipe also won a first place award
in the Fiery Foods contest in Austin Aug. 23.
Wildcat Salsa is produced with fresh ingredients.
It is low in calories and a no-fat food that
sells for $5.95 per pint jar. The Campus Store
is located in McGlothlin Campus Center. Store
hours Monday through Friday are 7:30 a.m. until
5:30 p.m. On Saturdays, the Campus Store is
open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
